Foundation portfolio evaluation

In this assignment we were to film are own opening sequence to our own movie, which had to be at least two minutes long.
Our opening scene is basically to do with a young girl who is alone as the residents of the city have been wiped out. However we did not make it obvious in our sequence we did this to create a tension to our film.

It begins with an establishing shot of the city of Manchester where we can see the Hilton Hotel, the palace theatre etc, and a text (type writer effect) came up on the screen stating where it is located, the time and the date. We did this shot by having the hand held camcorder on a Tri-Pod at the window on the top floor of the Ball building in our college. Then it cuts to a Low angle shot of the opposite side on the Hilton Hotel and pans down to show the deserted area of the AMC/The Great Northern and then cuts to some closed shops which would usually be busy at the time said at the start of the sequence.
Then we see a young girl who seems to be running from someone or something, where we see a close up of her face and shoes as she is running, a Point Of View Shot of her looking at the place she is about to go (car park), A Panning High Angle Shot looking down at the girl running through the street, and another POV shot of her entering the Car Park.

Snapshots from video:

Above: Crane Shot

Above: POV

When she is in the Car park we are able to see her running in and we also see another person walking in the distance who seems to fall to the ground. When she gets over to that person it changes to POV shot again of the girl on the floor and then there are shots of other people, who seem to be dead on the floor, and the girl runs off and the scene ends.
In our opening sequence we added a voice over on a few scenes to make it more dramatic and are used to give a sense of how the girl is feeling.
When we were in Post-Production Process and editing all our footage we came to realise that some of the shots inside the car park where the colours did not match, therefore when we had cut all are clips together we used the ‘Colour Corrector’ on the Apple Macs to adjust the colours.
Also some of the shots where in Wide Screen ratio 16:12 to a Full Screen ratio 16:9.
We didn’t use many effects in our film but we did use a Fade in Fade out transition in some cuts to make them smoother.
In some of our scenes we removed some of the Diagetic sound in some scenes and added mood music to make scenes have more of a dramatic effect. We also enhanced the sound of footsteps to speed up some scenes such as when she is running up and down the stairs.

Our media project uses the conventions of many thrillers out in the last five years ‘I am Legend’ , ’28 days later’ ‘final destination’ ECT’. Though it’s alike the desolate scenes of the films ours is more fluent in that there’s the same the same buildings in two shots and some panning which makes it all relative to the previous mis en scenes. It’s similar to the films by being desolate area’s and frequent use of panning and POV shots as well as the use of an Ariel shot to give the impression that the main character is small compared to the scale of the situation. It challenges conventions of film by having no effects and little dietetic sounds.
Our piece doesn’t represent any kind of social group of society but it does show an aspect of the human condition .How someone can mentally degenerate without human interaction ,the despair and anguish when completely isolated. The car park scene shows the desperation for companionship and the distress when they realise everyone around them is dying.
I think that an independent British company might distribute our film because it’s the style were renowned for. British films success relies predominantly on a good interpretation and performance from the cast, because we don’t have a big budget for CGI effects and massive advertising campaign.

The way that we tried to attract the audience is by trying to make our film dramatic and confusing. We wanted our film to look mysterious and keep the audience guessing what is going to happen next. This will keep the audience engaged in the film making them want to watch more to see how the movie if going to progress. We have learned how to use the camcorders, we have also learned how to connect the battery and insert the tape to begin filming. Also we learned how to use the buttons/controls on the camcorder correctly such as zoom and how to get play back. We also learned how to assemble the tripod and were able to correctly read the spirit level to get the tripod even. Then we learned how to use the Mac computers and many various programmes such as Final Cut Pro and Garage band. On Final Cut Pro we edit our film such as cutting and changing speed and the colours of the video. We also learned how to use Motion which entitled us to make animated titles to go at the beginning and end of our film to make it look more professional. We have learnt that better camera angles and more planning makes a much better final piece than if you rush through these things. Also the location has to match your piece for example we had to film most of our film when no one was around to match our plan of a deserted city. We also learned that in some cases dialogue is not nessecery and all you need is non-diagetic sound in the background to give the film an emotional feel, such as in ours we used a constant sound throughout yet enhanced it at some points to create more intense scenes. We have also learned to keep an eye out for continuity to make sure the film flows and there is not dramatic change in the costumes we went for keeping the coat and the bag throughout the film as this would probably help with and costume errors. We have also learned that the more work you put into your film the better the final piece will be. The use of titles in our main task makes our work look much more professinal done and shows that more effort has gone into it.

The Genre of our Film was a Thriller, and has the kind of Theme to the films ‘28 Days Later’ and ‘I Am Legend’.
There are many Similarities and differences in our Film from editing, structure, camera work, use of sound and mise-en-scene. Such as in out opening Sequences we shown shots of empty areas, which is very similar to the opening shots used in the I Am Legend opening. There is a differences with sound, this is because in our opening we used dramatic music to build up the tension, however in the “I Am Legend” Sequence there is no Non-Diagetic sound just natural. There are many similar shots used such as Long shots, establishing shots to view the cities i.e. Manchester, London (28Days Later).
As there are many similarities our film is very different and Unique to the others, as there are not of a higher budget and quality.

Location and Shots

Our main sequence will be fillmed out side and inside the car park on Dale Steet/Red Lion Street. We will be filming between 7.30am and 11.00am on a Friday Morning to film, this was because there was a lack of people around giving us a better theme of loneliness. Also we will be filming in Picadilly gardens, The great Northen Warehouse and at the streets in the Northern Quartar when the shops are closed.

Development Research

Development research:

28 Days Later Directed by Danny Boyle

I am LegendDirected by Frances Lawrence
A major factor of our sequence is that many of the people have died of the virus so we had to find a way to convey the lonliness the main character would be experiencing. So we drawn inspiration from the film 28days later and I am Legends desolate opening sequences.

There's sights in urban London that the majority would reconise and its desolate. Looted can machines and littering money shows that the city isn't in order anymore .It seems like the civilisations crumbled and there's no sign of anyone. These Signs that the place that would've been home to tens of thousand and is no longer occupied, like the dead phoneline ,unkept water mains dirty littered streets etc'. The peircing silence and signs of absence work well in conveying he's completely alone. Everything in the shots are there for a reason ,Boyle was on a budget but it worked in his favor making the film more intimate without the over use of special effects like in Hollywood blockbusters.Over turned buses ,abandoned cars Etc' say more than any character could and it makes the viewer ask questions engaging them in curiosity.

In i am Legends sequence ,they have CGi at disposal with a bigger buget in which they show ariel shots of the city to convey the vast deserted city. The radio transmition tells the audience that he can't find anyone, apart from his dog he's alone. Both show two major cities London and New York where would be the home to millions now completey ravaged. The environmental deterioration reflects the characters mental

Story Board

This was our origional idea but seen as we only needed to give a brief 2 minute sequence we adapted and changed alot of the story .We decided we didn't need to tell alot about what was going on or elaborate on the plot so we just tried to make it so people were curious and it held there suspense.

How it changed:

We decided to follow the same sort of theme, however not make it obvious to the audience. It is basicaly a young girl who is seen running round a deserted area, seeming like she is looking for soomeone or something.

we are taking the theme of are opening sequence from the Film ''28Days Later" from 2002 Directed from Danny boyle.

Film Analaysis

Analysis of opening sequence: Final Destination 2.

The beginning of Final Destination 2 is News footage of the previous movies events.”180 crash and series of mysterious events thereafter."It then shows close ups of the main characters room .You see a toy clown spinning from the ceiling which plays on the fact that this is a psychological movie. That the characters fear of the prediction. Bring them to their death faster because they fight it. The Audio is the news, but the visual is a panning of the bedroom .You see the characters hand spasm which tells the audience she's asleep. This gives a fly on the wall affect like she’s being watched by someone or a force. This is effective because it’s a psychological thriller which relies on idea that death is a person (Reaper) or thing.
In every shot the composition is done for a specific reason for example when the 'T' on Road Trip is obstructed by keys to spell Road rip .These subliminal Messages occur throughout the film are called ‘signs’ by the characters. Another’s example is when the Stanley knife is in a magnified picture of the main character, you know by the sharp, high pitched creepy music and visuals that something bad is going to happen to "Kimberly".
The opening sequence is a series of 'warnings ‘which is the flash forward premonition. These include Kimberly’s dad phoning about a leek of fluid and to get the car checked out .The others include a series of signs like highway to hell on the radio and the kid smashing the truck and red van together ECT.
It’s effective because it shows you what the film is like through the entire length. Its also intriguing as it’s particularly good at building suspense .Which I think is due to the deictic sound and lighting of shots .The mis-en-scene is constantly moving through the objects in her room from different angles and distances. Which is the same for the accidents throughout the feature because there are so many different things going on leading up to them the camera shots are rarely static and if they are they are to a dramatic effect which fits the films psychological thriller genre.

Preliminary

As Chris walkes down hall medium shot, and a close up of phone holding a message. Then we use a Hand Held Tracking shot of Chris walking down the corridor, then goes into a panning shot from behind the canteen glass windows. Then we see a close up of Tracy looking round the room, and we use another panning shot of chris shoes walking through the door, long shot where we can see both Tracy and Chris. A over the shoulder shot is used when Chris & Tracy exchange words, and this is a shot reverse shot pattern. Then there is a two shot/long shot of Chris & Tracy, which goes into of a close up of Chris hand slapping Tracy, and then the camera pans again as Chris leaves the room, and we finsh with a close up of Tracy reaction. In this task we used the 180 degree rule and the rule of thirds to make it more of a higher level.

180° Rule

The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states the two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera crosses the imaginary line it is called crossing the axes. An example of this looking at the diagram below would be if character 1 (orange shirt in the diagram) is on the left and Character 2 (blue shirt) is on the right, then Character 1 should be facing right at all times, even when character 2 is off the edge of the frame, and character2 should always be facing left. Shifting to the other side of the characters on a cut, so that character 2 is now on the left side and character 1 is on the right, will disorient the viewer, and break the flow of the scene.

Editing preliminary task

This is a Apple Mac computer which we used to edit our clips for our preliminary task.
We edited our video on Final Cut pro.
Firstly we uploaded our recorded clips, we connected the cam corder to the USB port with a USB cable, we then captured the parts of the clips that we needed to use. We started to cut the clips and then we organised them in the sequence we wanted. The way we did this is that we marked the clip In and Out for the duration that we wanted the clip. We then added sound effects and background music by using the program garage band we saved the sound and opened it with ITunes then we converted it to ACC then imported it into our sequence, we changed the volume of the clip to match. We then added a fade in and fade out dissolve transition to the beggining and end of the sequence. Also when the phone is shown we added a short fade in fade out dissolve transition to make the cut alot smoother.
Lastly we exported the video and saved it onto a USB stick.

Preliminary Task

we filmed our preliminary task in the yellow canteen, In the clip we see a girl walking through a door then her and another girl exchange words and ends in a slap, then we see first girl walk back out of the canteen while the second girl looks stunned holding cheek.

We used a tripod and camera and used a series of shots i.e 180 degree rule, tracking, panning etc...
